HTC is the manufacturer for the Pixel XL, with Google choosing the components to work with its operating system - similar to how Apple works with Foxconn to build the iPhone. It’s unlike the Nexus line, where the software was designed by Google and the hardware was made by a third-party manufacturer. You won’t have any issues, but note that the Pixel XL features tight hardware and software integration. That’s not to say the Snapdragon 810 in the Nexus 6P doesn’t perform well. But the Nexus 6P is powered by the Snapdragon 810, an outdated processor by 2016’s standards. to feature the processor, which is said to improve performance by 10 percent over the Snapdragon 820. In fact, it’s the first device in the U.S. The Pixel XL features the latest processor from Qualcomm - the Snapdragon 821. Both devices have 32 and 128GB storage options, but there is no 64GB model for the Pixel XL. This means it’s a little lighter as well. The Nexus 6P has 3GB of RAM, but the Pixel XL adds an extra gigabyte. The Pixel XL is a little smaller than the Nexus 6P, thanks to its 5.5-inch display. It shares almost the same specs as last year’s Nexus 6P, except for a few improvements. Yearly upgrades often don’t produce great differences in terms of hardware performance, and that’s reflective in the internals of the Pixel XL. The Snapdragon 810 in the Nexus 6P is definitely starting to show some signs of age. That means we’ll likely see unofficial ports of Android 9.0 Pie on both of these smartphones at some point in the near future. Luckily, the devices still have an active community of ROM tweakers that will no doubt provide third-party support for both the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X over the coming months. Google’s update policy for Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X Even despite the hardware problems, I still held on to my Nexus 6P for much longer thanks to the benefits of Stock Android. It’s a sad day for those of us who were essentially introduced to the world of Android devices thanks to the Nexus line. Since then we’ve seen the rise of the Google Pixel line, which took all of the principles of the Nexus program and then added a layer of polish and poise that just couldn’t be shook from the Nexus devices. It’s hard to believe that it has been three years since both were introduced in September 2015. The Huawei-made Nexus 6P and LG-made Nexus 5X were the finest devices produced during the Nexus program. Of course, that doesn’t mean Google can’t push another update, it’s just not promised that the company will do so. However, for a full year after, Google has been obligated to push security updates to these devices, and that obligation ended following this week’s November security patch. While all generations of Google’s Pixel lineup have gotten updates to Android Pie, the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X saw their final major platform updates with Android 8.1 Oreo. OTA download links and further information on what this patch fixes can be found here. Alas, both devices are still officially running Android 8.1 Oreo to just dash your hopes of official Pie support. The update means that both the Nexus 6P and 5X can be updated to build number OPM7.181205.001. Update 12/03: Somewhat surprisingly, the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X have received another security update even despite meeting the three-year deadline of required fixes from Google last month. That means that build number OPM7.181105.004 will be the final official build on both the Nexus 6P and the Nexus 5X and signals the true death of the Nexus line. As part of Google’s three-year update plan, the last Nexus devices have now received the final guaranteed OTA update.
